Convert cubic feet per minute (CFM) to cubic metres per hour (m³/h). One cubic foot is 0.0283168 m³ and an hour is 60 minutes, so 1 CFM = 1.69901 m³/h. This is the conversion for reading a US fan, air handler or extractor rating against a metric ventilation specification.

CFM is the airflow unit on US fans, air handling units, range hoods and duct design tables. m³/h is the unit in European and most international ventilation standards and equipment data. Both are volumetric, so converting is a single multiplication. It does not correct for air density: a rating at standard conditions converts to m³/h at the same conditions.
m³/h = CFM × 1.69901
One cubic foot per minute equals 1.69901 cubic metres per hour. Going the other way, one cubic metre per hour equals 0.588579 CFM.
Converting 1000 CFM:
1000 × 1.69901 = 1699.01 m³/h
| CFM | m³/h |
|---|---|
| 1 CFM | 1.69901 m³/h |
| 10 CFM | 16.9901 m³/h |
| 50 CFM | 84.9504 m³/h |
| 100 CFM | 169.901 m³/h |
| 250 CFM | 424.752 m³/h |
| 500 CFM | 849.504 m³/h |
| 1000 CFM | 1699.01 m³/h |
| 2000 CFM | 3398.02 m³/h |
| 5000 CFM | 8495.04 m³/h |

Common questions about converting cubic feet per minute to cubic metres per hour.
Multiply the CFM value by 1.69901. For example, 1000 CFM x 1.69901 = 1699.01 m³/h. The factor is 0.0283168 m³ per cubic foot times 60 minutes per hour.
One cubic foot per minute is 1.69901 cubic metres per hour, or 0.471947 litres per second.
400 CFM is 679.6 m³/h. 400 CFM per ton of cooling is a common HVAC rule of thumb, which works out to about 680 m³/h per 3.5 kW of cooling.
Multiply by 0.471947. 1,000 CFM is 471.9 L/s. L/s is the airflow unit in UK, Australian and many ISO ventilation standards; m³/h is more common in continental Europe.
No. CFM is the actual volume of air moved at operating conditions; SCFM is that volume corrected to standard temperature and pressure. The 1.69901 factor applies to either, but only convert like for like: SCFM to standard m³/h, ACFM to actual m³/h.
