MGD to GPM Converter

Convert million gallons per day (MGD) to US gallons per minute (GPM). Multiply by 694.444. This is the conversion you need to turn a plant capacity or permit limit into a pump and pipe sizing duty.

How It Works

A treatment plant is specified in MGD, but the pumps, headers and meters inside it are selected in GPM. Converting plant capacity to GPM is the first step in hydraulic design. Remember that peak instantaneous flow is usually well above the average implied by the MGD rating, so apply a peaking factor before final sizing.

MGD to GPM Formula

GPM = MGD × 694.444

One million gallons per day equals 694.444 US gallons per minute. Going the other way, one US gallons per minute equals 0.00144 million gallons per day.

Worked Example

Converting 100 MGD:

100 × 694.444 = 69444.4 GPM

FAQ

Common questions about converting million gallons per day to US gallons per minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert MGD to GPM?

Multiply the MGD value by 694.444. For example, 2.5 MGD x 694.444 = 1736.11 GPM.

How many gallons per minute is 1 MGD?

One million gallons per day equals 694.444 US gallons per minute, since a day contains 1440 minutes.

What is 5 MGD in GPM?

5 MGD equals 3472.22 GPM. For quick estimates, multiplying MGD by 700 is within 1% of the exact figure.

Should I size pumps on the MGD average?

Not directly. The MGD rating is an average daily figure, while pumps must handle peak hourly flow. Municipal designs typically apply a peaking factor of 1.5 to 4 depending on system size, so convert to GPM first and then apply the appropriate factor.

How does MGD relate to cubic metres per day?

One MGD equals approximately 3785.41 cubic metres per day, since one million US gallons is 3785.41 m³. This is the usual figure when comparing US plant ratings with metric specifications.
