GPM to GPH Converter

Convert gallons per minute (GPM) to gallons per hour (GPH). There are 60 minutes in an hour, so multiply by 60. The gallon cancels out, so the same factor applies to US and Imperial gallons. GPH is the unit on aquarium pumps, fuel pumps, well yields and drip irrigation; GPM is used for most water pumps and fixtures.

How It Works

GPM and GPH measure the same thing, volume of liquid per unit of time, in the same volume unit. Only the time base differs. Multiplying by 60 converts a per-minute rate to a per-hour rate; there is no rounding and no dependence on which gallon you use.

GPM to GPH Formula

GPH = GPM × 60

One gallon per minute equals 60 gallons per hour, exactly. Going the other way, one gallon per hour equals 0.0166667 gallons per minute.

Worked Example

Converting 5 GPM:

5 × 60 = 300 GPH

FAQ

Common questions about converting gallons per minute to gallons per hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert GPM to GPH?

Multiply by 60. For example, 5 GPM x 60 = 300 GPH. The factor is exact because it is only a change of time unit.

How many GPH is 1 GPM?

One gallon per minute is 60 gallons per hour. A 10 GPM well pump therefore moves 600 gallons an hour, or 14,400 gallons a day if it ran continuously.

Does it matter whether the gallons are US or Imperial?

No. The gallon is the same on both sides of the conversion, so the factor of 60 applies either way. It only matters when you go on to convert to litres: a US gallon is 3.78541 L, an Imperial gallon 4.54609 L.

What is 2.5 GPM in GPH?

2.5 GPM is 150 GPH. This is a typical US shower head flow, which over a 10-minute shower uses 25 gallons.

How do I convert GPM to gallons per day?

Multiply by 1,440 (60 minutes x 24 hours). 5 GPM is 7,200 gallons per day. The GPM to GPD converter has a full table.
